Masson was born in Balagny-sur-Therain, Oise, but grew up in Belgium. He began his studies of art at the age of eleven in Brussels, at the Académie Royale des Beaux-Arts under the direction of Constant Montald, and later studied in Paris. He fought for France in World War I and was seriously injured.
Masson was one of the earliest surrealists and in abstract paintings sought to evoke the painful experiences of people and animals in a chaotic world.
