His father, Robert De Niro Sr. was of Italian and Irish descent and the mother, Helen O'Reilly was of English, German, French and Dutch descent. De Niro trained as an actor at the Actors Studio (under the legend Lee Strasberg), the Stella Adler Conservatory and the American Workshop. He made his film debut in 1968 in Brian De Palma's Greetings. In 1973, he gained attention after playing the lead role in the film Bang the Drum Slowly. In the same year, De Niro began his successful collaboration with director Martin Scorsese, in the film Death Coils.
