Robert De Niro was born as the son of two American artists living in New York. His father, Robert De Niro Sr. was of Italian and Irish descent and the mother, Helen O'Reilly was of English, German, French and Dutch descent. De Niro trained as an actor at the Actors Studio (under the legend Lee Strasberg), the Stella Adler Conservatory and the American Workshop. He made his film debut in 1968 in Brian De Palma's Greetings. In 1973, he gained attention after playing the lead role in the film Bang the Drum Slowly. In the same year, De Niro began his successful collaboration with director Martin Scorsese, in the film Death Coils. That role in turn earned him the role of young mob boss Vito Corleone in flashback scenes in Francis Ford Coppola's The Godfather II. De Niro was awarded the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor for this role. In 1976, he collaborated again with Martin Scorsese in the now cult classic Taxi Driver. This film was a milestone in every way, and now De Niro was truly ranked as one of America's absolute best actors. Now his career took off in earnest, and De Niro appeared in films such as 1900, King of Comedy, Once Upon a Time in America, The Mission, The Untouchables, Mafia Brothers, Cape Fear, Casino, Heat, Sleepers, Wag the Dog, Jackie Brown , Analyze more, Flawless and The Kindred is the worst.
