PJ Nyströms Printing Company. Stockholm, 1735 and 1736. First edition. Two 4:o volumes in contemporary leather binding with gilt spine text and rich gilt spine decoration. The title pages are printed in red and black. (XVI), 327 pp., (IX) + 39 engraved folding plates numbered I-XL. The second part. (LXXX)), 275 p. , (V).
Mårten Triewald was a Swedish businessman, engineer and amateur physicist. He worked at a young age in coal mines in England where he studied the steam engines in detail. He returned to Sweden in 1726 and built at Dannemora mines a steam engine or as it was expressed at the time a "fire - and air engine" i.e. were powered by fire and air, where "air" meant steam, for bilge pumping of water from mines. According to now-known history, this steam engine was the very first in Sweden for use in commercial operations.
Condition
Note that 25 engraved plates are missing in the second part. The bands are rubbed and with edge wear, but well held together. The binders bulge outwards a little. Signatures, notes and a stamp on the front cover pages. Fresh submissions.
