1542060. ART NOUVEAU TIFFANY STYLE TABLE LAMP.

Description

Art Nouveau, Tiffany style lamp, Favrile glass, height: 43 cm.

Louis Comfort Tiffany (born February 18, 1848) is an American artist. Creator of several companies, he also painted, designed jewelry and furniture, today a Tiffany lamp of its creation is worth several tens of thousands of dollars.

Louis is the son of Harriet and Charles Lewis Tiffany, founder of a thriving jewelry company, Tiffany & Co. He graduated from the American Academy of Design in 1866.

His first achievement was a painting he performed while a student of George Inness in 1867. At the age of 24 he became interested in glass work. It was at this time that he met Mary Woodbridge Goddard, whom he married on May 15, 1872.

In 1885 he founded his own glass processing company and invented a process for the production of opaline glasses, to which other artists prefer clear tinted glass. Each angle is motivated by the ideals of the arts and crafts movement founded by William Morris in Britain. One of the competitors is the glassmaker John La Farge (1835-1910).

In 1893 his company introduced a new technique, "Favrile", for making vases and bowls. This name derives from the Latin fabrilis, meaning "handmade" 1. He also produced stained glass windows (notably at the Church of the Incarnation, Madison Avenue, New York) while his firm made a range of interior decorations. He uses all of his talents to design his own home, Laurelton Hall, in Oyster Bay, Long Island, which was completed in 1904.

Many companies spring up: LC Tiffany & associated artists (founded 1879), an interior design firm (in which he worked, including Stanford White), Tiffany Glass Co (1885), Tiffany Glass and Decoration Co, Tiffany Studios, Tiffany Ovens, and LC Tiffany stoves.

At the end of the 1920s he gradually withdrew from the business. His company, Tiffany Studios, went bankrupt in 19321, a year before his death. Louis Comfort Tiffany was buried in the Green Wood Cemetery in Brooklyn, New York.
