Around the turn of the century, she was a very popular dancer, partly because of her dancing but perhaps even more so because of her favorable appearance. She was alleged to have been the mistress of King Leopold II of Belgium for a time, which became one of the biggest scandals of the time. Cléo de Merode toured with great success in Sweden in 1903. In addition to Stockholm and Gothenburg, she performed in Karlstad, Falun, Uppsala, Linköping, Jönköping, Lund and Malmö. In 1955 she published her autobiography.
