Printmaking is an art form where the image is printed in an edition, often signed and numbered, which makes original art more accessible without losing its closeness to the artist's hand. Through various printing techniques, the artist can work with both colour and line and surface, and the expressions range from the finely tuned and detailed to the more direct and powerful.
Several of the classic techniques of printmaking are represented in the theme. Lithography reappears in many of the works, with its characteristic ability to capture both soft color transitions and a vivid line. Etching, which is based on the motif being carved or etched into a metal sheet, often gives a more precise and detailed expression, where the line is at the center. There are also color schemes and colour lithographs that show how the techniques are developing towards a richer and more painterly imagery.
Some of our favourites follow:
Lennart Jirlow, "The Restaurant"
A vibrant and detailed interior where Jirlow's characteristic colour scale and storytelling joy create a scene filled with movement and social presence.
Philip von Schantz, Still life with grapes
A tight and harmonious still life where form and color are balanced with precision, and where the classic motif is given a modern, graphic clarity.
Mårten Andersson, "The Lion Tamer's House"
A richly ornamented sheet where architectural elements and decorative past interact in a detailed and colourful expression.
Max Walter Svanberg, Surrealist motif with woman and bird
A dreamlike and symbolic composition where Svanberg's peculiar visual world unites the physical and the imaginative in a charged, poetic space.
