Stockholms Auktionsverk Sickla takes us on yet another journey across the map of Europe and through the cultural heritage of antiquity and the Renaissance. We are captivated, astonished and enlightened. Here the classical ideals are spread to a new generation, and when we return we do so richer in knowledge and experience.
Among the just over 100 objects selected by the auction house's specialist, a generous variety of artefacts are on offer – objects that once served significant functions, presented alongside curiosities and all manner of beautiful things. Two Egyptian funerary necklaces are shown beside a hunting painting in the manner of Peter Paul Rubens. Roman coins share space with sculpture fragments. A Grand Tour souvenir in the form of Scipio's tomb is placed beside a globe-shaped library clock from Atelier Smith & Sons London.
And then there are amphorae, cuneiform tablets, sculptures, incense burners, a stereoscope with images showing volcanic eruptions, oil lamps and much, much more.
The star lot of the auction is a late Roman limestone sculpture depicting Aphrodite.
Welcome on the Grand Tour!
