After last year’s extensive and highly successful auction featuring items from Upsala-Ekeby, which we organized here at Formstad Auctions, we claimed it was an opportunity that would likely never come again. But the question is whether that opportunity has now returned. This year’s Upsala-Ekeby auction can, in many ways, rival last year’s.
For lovers and collectors of Upsala-Ekeby ceramics, this auction is teeming with rare and attractive pieces, spanning from the late 19th century up to the 1970s. Upsala-Ekeby masterfully combined high-volume production of utilitarian items with artistically advanced studio ceramics, and an auction like this, with its numerous lots and many high-quality objects, is therefore not only a celebration for collectors and Upsala-Ekeby enthusiasts, but also something of an educational journey through the history of Swedish ceramics for all of us. The auction takes us from Art Nouveau to strict Modernism, with the vibrant 1960s and 1970s in between, including Swedish Grace and Swedish Modern — styles that in recent years have experienced a clear resurgence among auction audiences.
Leading artists such as Anna-Lisa Thomson, Vicke Lindstrand, Ingrid Atterberg, Mari Simmulson, and Hjördis Oldfors are represented with numerous works and series of art ceramics, but lesser-known names like Hyonsun Rhee, Einar Törning, Greta Runeborg, Göran Andersson, and Kjell Blomberg also appear — all worthy of attention for their unique contributions.
There are many highlights in the auction, but two stand out particularly: Mari Simmulson’s unique ceremonial dish featuring a Picasso-inspired female face, and Vicke Lindstrand’s monumental sculpture of a standing woman holding two jugs. We warmly invite you to discover even more in yet another spectacular auction themed around Upsala-Ekeby!
