Auktionsmagasinet Vänersborg has transformed its premises into a sewing atelier and, for a brief time, created a museum dedicated to the history of modern sewing. Visitors are invited into a wondrous world where thimbles, balls of yarn, and sewing accessories fill display cases, étuis, boxes, and caskets.
Among the 150 lots, miniatures abound, yet the range of forms is remarkably rich. A silver yarn holder made by Gustaf Folcker in 1863 could easily pass as a Christmas ornament for the coming season. Thimbles constitute a collecting field in their own right, with many examples crafted in gold, and for those interested in design, three elegant silver thimbles by the Danish firm Georg Jensen are also included. A lot of silk sewing thread can be traced back to the 19th century and to Agneta Benedikta Sylvan, born in 1768 and deceased in 1838. In this piece, the gentle beating of history’s wings can be felt—softly and quietly—over a tradition that, through a collection such as this, is brought to life and allowed to flourish once more.
A warm welcome!
