It was in the 1870s that Franz Detleff and William Goebel began producing porcelain on a small scale. Before long, figurines in what is sometimes referred to as the "Meissen Rococo" style began to emerge. A few decades into the new century, the factory underwent modernization, and the small creations were dressed in the fashion of the time: Art Deco.
In 1935, an agreement was signed with Sister Maria Innocentia Hummel, granting the factory the rights to produce three-dimensional figurines based on her drawings and paintings. This marked the birth of the now-famous Hummel figurines—and the rest, as they say, is history.
Now, part of that history is being presented as Växjö Auktionskammare offers 40 lots under the heading Goebel. The recognition factor is, of course, high, but the collection also includes a few rarer pieces that are sure to appeal to collectors in the field.
