Collecting Astrid Lindgren and Pippi Longstocking memorabilia is the most natural thing in the world, according to Magnus Palm. Astrid Lindgren has touched the lives of generations of children and adults alike, and her books and writings have become a thrilling domain for collectors around the globe. This carefully curated auction showcases first editions of nearly everything Lindgren ever wrote, including, of course, the first three Pippi Longstocking books. But the auction also reflects the importance of illustrators in bringing Lindgren’s stories to life, especially Ingrid Vang Nyman and Ilon Wikland.
The auction also includes twelve items by Maj Lindman, one of Sweden's leading children's authors from the 1920s onward, now mostly forgotten. Known for tales of the well-mannered girls Rufsi, Tufsi, and Tott, her work stands as a stark contrast to the rebellious Pippi. This juxtaposition between Lindman and Lindgren — and the worlds they depict — piqued Palm's interest, and it felt fitting to have these authors share the auction stage.
Beyond first editions, the auction highlights some treasured dedication copies, a rare Spanish collector’s album for Pippi in the South Seas, the scarce 1946 play Pippi Longstocking's Life and Adventures, and a separate publication of Pomperipossa in Monismanien, Lindgren’s satirical tale about Sweden’s tax system, said to have contributed to the Social Democrats losing power for the first time in 40 years in 1976.
Astrid Lindgren’s world is much more than Bullerby children and Emil’s antics — a timeless past that remains ever-present. Welcome to an exciting and playful auction!
