Accordion, concertina, hand harmonium, or squeezebox. Beloved instrument, many names. For a time, it was often referred to as the "Magdeburg Spiel." This was because in the German city, no fewer than 19 accordion manufacturers could be counted. There, they mastered diminished seventh chords, circle of fifths, and cliché-shaped keyboards, to be sure. But not everyone came to love the instrument. At the turn of the last century, various tastemakers lamented the accordion's negative influence on folk dance music, and a few decades later, figures like Sten Broman even criticized the instrument's mediocrity. But times have changed, and today the accordion is back in vogue. And some who appreciate the sweet tones of this kind are Thörner & Ek, who now present over 200 accordions, a range of gramophones, both horn and portable, a handful of guitars, several harmonicas, and a few other oddities from which a chord or two may emerge. Welcome!
