Södermanlands Auktionsverk turns the spotlight on a remarkable phenomenon in Swedish history – the plate coins of the 17th and 18th centuries. Today they are sought-after collector's items, but at the time they were a necessary means of payment. Quite a lot to carry, one might think, for a prosperous merchant conducting major business. The plate coins were eventually phased out by a central bank that issued banknotes instead.
But the coins in this auction are undeniably tangible witnesses from a society that once was. The names of the great monarchs line up: Karl XI, Karl II, Adolf Fredrik, Ulrika Eleonora and Fredrik I.
You are all warmly welcome to be fascinated by these historical documents in copper.
