Paolo, Fra (Sarpi), Italian historian, (1552-1623). Les droits des Sovereigns (I-II) défendus contre les excommunications et les interdits des Papes. 2 vol. Chez Henri Scheurleer, The Hague, 1721. Two 8vo volumes in contemporary leather binding with gilt spine text and richly gilt spines. Marbled title page and red cuts. Title pages printed in red and black. (XXII), 531 p. + (II), 359 p., (LXXI).
Provenance. The Wrangel von Brehmer family with bookplate and coat of arms.
Before the Inquisition, Paolo Sarpi was accused of being in contact with heretics. During the Republic of Venice's struggle with Pope Paul V, as the state's official adviser on ecclesiastical matters (teologo-consultore), he firmly and boldly defended the independence of secular governments from the papacy. At the same time (1607), at the instigation of the Roman curia, as has been assumed with almost complete certainty, he was wounded by hired bandits. Source Wikipedia.
