It is in the 1920s that they exhibit together for the first time. This takes place in their home town, despite the fact that several of them have studied and painted across the vibrant artistic landscape of Europe. At that time they are Cubists. Or plane geometrists. Soon they will become Surrealists and remain together until the death of member Stellan Mörner in 1979. Over their 50 years of close-knit collaboration, the Halmstad Group leaves an indelible mark on Swedish art history.
At Halmstads Auktionskammare we are now given a cross-section of their artistic achievement. There we see Esaias Thorén's beach studies and Waldemar Lorentzson's hauled-up boats. Sven Jonson is represented by his blue pictorial worlds with architectural remains and arches. From Stellan Mörner's easel comes one of his many paintings connected to the world of theatre. "Souvenirer från scenen; det romerska tältet" gives us everything we could wish for in colour, with a blood-orange sun on its way down. Axel Olson's name appears on a depiction of the west coast, and his brother Erik Olson's contribution is a potato picker – and that very painting was also the artist's 50th birthday gift to his colleague Sven Jonson.
