It's challenging to discern any traces of his hometown, Lycksele, in his art. It's simpler to draw parallels to his contemporaries at the Valand School of Art. Valter Gibson, an expressive and prolific modernist, enrolled in the school in 1952 and had the Hungarian artist Endre Nemes as his teacher. Nemes left a clear mark on the school for several years around the mid-20th century, influencing Valter Gibson along with Acke Oldenburg and Leif Ericson. However, Gibson managed to balance these influences and create something independent on his canvases. His teeming compositions, often held in a relatively heavy color palette, garnered an audience. His debut at Gallery 54 was followed by many more exhibitions.
Now, Stockholm's Auction House in Gothenburg presents a rich selection from his extensive body of work, offering a fair representation of his broad repertoire. You are warmly welcome to discover - or rediscover - Valter Gibson!
