"I feel nothing as marvelous as nature."
It is Ellen Trotzig who writes down that sentence in her diary when she is twenty years old. And it is largely her depictions of nature that have granted her a place in Swedish art history. Undulating fields and hills where the sun finally finds its way through rhythmically repeating cloud formations. She particularly interpreted nature in eastern Skåne, and it is no wonder she has been called the first female painter of Österlen. At Crafoord Auctions in Malmö, we encounter her as precisely that landscape painter, but also as an easel artist and interpreter of the symbolic fairy-tale world of the 20th century.
She studied at Valand Art School in Gothenburg, where she had Carl Wilhelmson as her teacher, and occasionally his artistic vision shines through her canvases. For a short time, like many of her contemporaries, she was in Paris. It doesn't seem to have left a significant impact, although names like Gauguin are occasionally mentioned in the same breath as her own name.
Warmly welcome to Crafoord Auctions in Malmö and seven works by Österlen's first female painter!
