The clock ticks, pages turn in an old volume, and the scent of cigars lingers. In Auktionshuset Kolonn’s themed auction, The Gentleman’s Room history, craftsmanship, and objects with character converge in a setting that evokes the classic gentleman’s study.
Among the timepieces in the auction are a magnificent Gustavian wall clock signed by Jacob Kock—a master watchmaker in Stockholm—a Swiss table clock in the shape of a wild boar, and a 14-karat gold savonette (hunter-case) pocket watch. The collection also features 17th-century books, royal photographs bearing original signatures, and a Parian porcelain bust of August Strindberg.
The furniture spans several eras, with mahogany and walnut serving as recurring materials. A Baroque cabinet stands out, as does a table featuring an engraving of Stockholm’s triumphal arch from the reign of Ulrika Eleonora. The selection further includes a Neo-Renaissance chest of drawers, a classic valet stand, and a Scottish uniform jacket. Empire-style pewter candlesticks and a "moonlight" hanging lamp enhance the room’s atmosphere, while a globe bar evokes the conversations and gatherings typical of such a salon.
On the walls, engraved portraits of monarchs and officials hang alongside 18th- and 19th-century maps, paintings, and hunting trophies. Smaller items include two fountain pens, pieces of Russian silver, and a sculpture in the form of a human skull. Also featured here is a miniature chest of drawers in the Directoire style, as well as a pair of 18-karat gold cufflinks.
You are welcome to explore the Gentlemen’s Room.
