Monica Bratt is among the most influential Swedish glass artists of the 20th century. From 1937 to 1958, she was employed at Reijmyre Glassworks, and her drinking glasses, wine glasses, decanters, plates, pitchers, and bowls from there quickly became popular in Swedish households, with some of them becoming iconic symbols of the Swedish welfare state. Less known is that she studied at both Otte Sköld's painting school and the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Stockholm.
And now, when Stockholms Auktionsverk Malmö presents Monica Bratt, it is the visual artist we encounter. In a theme of 28 paintings, we get to experience an artistic career that has been overshadowed by her own successes as a glass designer. The emphasis is on portrait painting, where Bratt truly excels with her sensitivity to subtle shifts in expression and gestures, but the auction also includes some outdoor views. All paintings have been passed down within the family, so the provenance is the best possible.
