Japanese craftsmanship has a history spanning many centuries. Its high quality is defined by a profound respect for natural materials, the value of patience, the art of repetition, and—above all—the fundamental importance of passing traditions forward. When Japan opened to the world in the latter half of the 19th century, European artists and artisans were captivated and inspired. Out of these encounters (and a few other influences) they enriched their shared artistic vocabulary and helped create what came to be known as Art Nouveau.
We now have the opportunity to explore more than 120 lots of Japanese craftsmanship. Here we encounter lacquerware, cloisonné, incense burners, porcelain, woodblock prints, and ink wash paintings. Together, these works offer a glimpse into a wondrous world where only the very best will do.
