Biografie

Ingeborg Andreasen-Lindborg (born Elna Ingeborg Andreasen) was a pioneering Danish-Swedish artist recognised for her contributions to painting, drawing, and printmaking. Born in Hjørlunde, Frederiksborg, Denmark, to farmer Hans Andreasén and Johanna Dorothea Sörensen-Dildal, Andreasen-Lindborg’s artistic journey took her across continents and established her as a significant figure in Nordic art. Her formal art education began at the Art Institute of Chicago from 1896 to 1897, followed by study at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts in Copenhagen from 1900 to 1907. At the academy, she made history by becoming the first woman to be awarded a gold medal in 1906. In 1907, she married the artist and curator Axel Edvin Lindborg, and the couple later moved to Stockholm, where she continued her studies at the Royal Swedish Academy of Fine Arts’ etching school under Axel Tallberg in 1909.

Intimate Interiors and Everyday Moments

Her artistic output was diverse, encompassing portraits, animals, still lifes and landscapes, executed in oil, watercolour, pencil, and etchings. Andreasen's work is characterised by its sensitive handling of light and atmosphere, a hallmark of Scandinavian painting of her era. Her landscapes often depict the tranquil beauty of the Danish countryside, coastal vistas, or quiet village scenes, rendered with a delicate palette of muted tones and soft transitions. In her interior paintings, she masterfully conveyed a sense of warmth and lived-in comfort, often focusing on the interplay of natural light through windows. Andreasen's brushwork, while restrained, was confident, allowing her to imbue her subjects with a quiet dignity and a contemplative mood.

A Subtle Voice in Danish Art

Andreasen-Lindborg exhibited widely throughout her career, both with her husband at Salong Joel in Stockholm and independently at major venues. She participated in exhibitions by Grafiska sällskapet, the spring exhibitions at Charlottenborg Palace in Copenhagen, and the Chicago Society of Etchers’ exhibitions in Chicago.
