Biografie

Jonas Bohlin was born 1953 in Sweden and has become one of the country’s most influential figures in contemporary design. Initially trained in civil engineering, Bohlin shifted his focus to the arts, enrolling at Konstfack, the University of Arts, Crafts and Design in Stockholm, where he studied interior architecture and furniture design. This blend of technical precision from engineering and creative freedom from art school became a defining feature of his career.

Innovator in Furniture and Interior Design

Bohlin rose to prominence in the early 1980s with his graduation project, the “Concrete” chair, a daring combination of steel, leather, and concrete that challenged traditional ideas about comfort, beauty, and materials in furniture design. His work consistently blurs the lines between functional design and sculpture, often incorporating industrial materials into refined, elegant forms. Beyond furniture, Bohlin has designed interiors, lighting, and public installations, always emphasising craftsmanship, material honesty, and a strong narrative element. His projects often integrate a deep sense of place, responding to the architectural and cultural context of each space.

International Recognition and Lasting Influence

Bohlin’s work has been exhibited internationally, earning him awards and recognition far beyond Sweden’s borders. He has taught at design institutions, inspiring a generation of designers to think critically about form, function, and the role of emotion in design. His approach combines minimalism with a tactile sensibility, ensuring that his creations feel human and engaging despite their often industrial aesthetic. Today, Jonas Bohlin is celebrated not only for his pioneering role in Swedish design but also for his enduring ability to create works that challenge convention while remaining timeless. His influence continues to shape both Scandinavian and global design conversations.
