Biografie

At the age of 20 Tommy Assarsson attended an art school in Lund, where he was taught by the prominent artist Jules Schyl. This early training laid the foundation for an artistic journey that would be characterized by a deeply personal and unique style. During the 1950s, Assarsson broadened his creative palette by working as an illustrator at Sydsvenska Dagbladet, an experience that undoubtedly honed his ability to capture movement and character. His sculptures and art are hard to resist, not least his iconic leaping hippos and the shaggy bison that catch the eye. His work reflects a love for the robust and a desire to create freely from the heart, resulting in a body of work full of energy and life.

His ability to create unique expressions was particularly evident in his sculptures, where he could capture both weight and playfulness.

A Lasting Contribution to Swedish Art

Throughout his career, Assarsson exhibited widely in Sweden and occasionally abroad. His works were acquired by public institutions and collectors who valued his craftsmanship and his ability to integrate contemporary aesthetics with timeless forms. His passing in 2024 marked the end of a long career, but his influence endures through the pieces he created and the inspiration he provided to younger Swedish artists. Today, his work is remembered as a testament to the enduring relevance of quality craftsmanship in the modern art world.
