They have clinked in the pockets of merchants since time immemorial. Coins — an efficient means of payment that came to develop pure bartering. Over time, the minting of coins became a skilled craft, and emperors and kings (and of course the occasional queen as well) had their portraits adorn the obverse sides of coins, which could also be decorated with state emblems and royal coats of arms.
