John Bauer Goes Manhattan is a tribute to the artist John Bauer.
He possessed a unique ability to capture the magic of Swedish folklore in his illustrations.
Together with photographer Richard Ryan’s Bauer-inspired images, Crafoord Auctions Stockholm is launching an exciting art theme.
It’s an unexpected encounter between Swedish fairy tale tradition and the urban landscape of New York City.
Here, Ryan’s photographic homage to Bauer meets Bauer’s complete suite of 30 mezzotints—a long-forgotten chapter in his artistic output.
The Bauer suite is an exclusive numbered edition of 200 copies. It consists of 30 motifs and is very rare on the market. The mezzotints from 1918 are hand-mounted on slightly heavier printmaking paper. This sets them apart from the more common versions, which were printed on smooth paper in unlimited editions.
Richard Ryan’s ten photographs form a visually grand, epic journey. We follow Princess Tuvstarr from the depths of the Swedish primeval forest, across the country, all the way to Manhattan.
Inspired by both The Wonderful Adventures of Nils and Vilhelm Moberg’s The Emigrants, Ryan blends the magical with the modern in a new visual tale.
Step into our world of fairy tales—welcome!
