A knife is of course required, along with time, a skilled hand and a tremendous amount of patience. A soft wood is also essential – perhaps lime, birch, alder, aspen or willow. For those who have mastered the art, it is simply a matter of revealing the figures, the characters, the scenes that lie within. By tradition, many carved wooden figures have been placed in comical situations. Some are caricatures of well-known faces. A few are on their way home from the pub, and quite a number are churchgoers.
We are treated to some such figures when Gomér & Andersson Linköping presents 61 lots within the genre. Familiar names such as Carl-Johan Trygg, Bengt Fransson and Herman Rosell share the space with Martin Stenström, who represents an altogether different school.
