From Swedish Nature to the Intimate Still Life
Malmstedt’s landscapes reflect the shifting seasons and subdued palette of the Nordic environment. With a focus on harmony and composition, he often painted forest scenes, rural roads and seascapes that conveyed a sense of solitude and reflection. Equally skilled in still life, Malmstedt created intimate studies of fruit, vessels and flowers, rendered with soft but deliberate brushstrokes. His work in pastel was especially effective in capturing gentle tonal transitions and a tactile surface quality.
