The tradition of painting on Öland has a long and storied history. As far back as the second half of the 19th century, the island's singular landscape was drawing artists to take up brush and palette. During the 1940s, many artists travelling from afar also chose to make their way to Öland, as the war in Europe made it difficult to stay in France and Italy.
The auction "Ölandsmålare" brings together artists with ties to the island. Among the early pioneers, we find two works by Nils Kreuger, a sunset by Öland's celebrated sun painter Per Ekström, and an early painting by the Öland-born Artur Percy. Sigfrid "Siffran" Södergren is represented by no fewer than seven works – ranging from his beloved depictions of Hulterstad to the less familiar territory of still life and the nude. From Helge Johansson's all too brief career, two paintings are included, one of which bears the dedication "To my friend A. C:son Percy from Helge Johansson, Christmas Day 1910" on the reverse. A larger collection of works by Edvin Lindholm-Houge will also go under the hammer, several of which have previously featured in various memorial exhibitions. Two paintings with provenance from the Erlandsson family in Slagerstad were in all likelihood given as payment for food and lodging! Also represented are Sven Svensson with his motifs of the Alvar, Axel Kargel with an early work, a "Limestone Hill" by Sven Ljungberg, Rolf Ingvar Karlsson with several Öland scenes, and Ivar Morsing with "Promenade, Öland", to name but a few.
In total, 55 artists are represented across the 119 lots. Welcome to Auktionsfirma Kenneth Svensson's art auction, presented under the title "Ölandsmålare"!
