He followed in the footsteps of the French Post-Impressionists, embraced Parisian ideals, yet was born in the small village of Välluv in Skåne. His debut was in 1922, but he earned his living as an advertising artist and window display designer.
Now, with Stockholms Auktionsverk Helsingborg showcasing 32 of Cederberg's works, we are presented with his now well-known still lifes: apples, pears, chestnuts, an occasional pipe, carefully arranged on tables as if placed by a scenographer’s hand. We also glimpse a few earlier works, where a looser brushstroke style takes form. The checkered floor appears as a recurring motif, as do the coastal views where the sea might represent a passage to the subconscious or simply serve as backdrops in carefully composed visual worlds. Worlds that are uniquely Cederberg's within the bustling landscape of 20th-century modernism. The often wide frames give the impression of window sills through which we glimpse Cederberg’s inner landscapes.
