The International Spring Auction is here! Stockholm Auktionsverk Helsinki presents nearly 200 lots of fine art and selected crafts. The selection includes no less than two significant paintings by Akseli Gallen-Kallela. Of particular importance is his "Wintry Forest," a work from 1900 with complete provenance that has been featured in literature and exhibited at major exhibitions. The artist's own attitude towards the harsh nature is poetically clear in a letter reproduced in the catalog text. In it, he describes how "the eye is drawn to the whiteness" but tires of "the harsh cold." His other painting in the auction is "View from the Terrace," painted in the revolutionary year of 1917. It is an expressive work that, despite the tranquil subject, vibrates in bright colors. Another highlight is the silver fox from Fabergé resting on a pedestal of masur birch.
And alongside these, mention can be made of Helene Shjerbeck's lithograph "Silk Shoe," the sparkling and shimmering bracelet in the most precious art deco style, Jacques-François Courtin's elegantly executed female portraits, Pekka Halonen's sunlit snowy forest glade, Antoni Tapies' gentle yet expressive stoneware sculpture, Ilya Repin's festive depiction of a holiday in 1893, Paavo Tynell's Bridal Bouquet, and much much more.
