Description

Claudius II Gothicus became Roman emperor 268, when his representative Gallienus was assassinated.

Immediately after his exaltation, Claudius defeated the Goths so thoroughly that they did not cause any trouble for a hundred years. About 50,000 Goths may have been killed. It was on the occasion of this victory that Claudius was nicknamed "Gothicus".

But the emperor had no peace, for now the vandals appeared on the horizon. However, Claudius died in the plague of 270 before he could deal with them.

During the reign of Claudius II, the priest Valentinus appeared in Rome, he was one of the leading figures of the later feast of Valentine's Day, which falls on 14 February.
