6260. FINE COSWAY BINDING WITH MINIATURES OF NAPOLEON I and JEAN BAPTISTE BERNADOTTE WITH 10 SIGNED NAPOLEON AND BERNADOTTE DOCUMENTS from the Crawford Collection.

NAPOLEON I (NAPOLEON BONAPARTE) Emperor of the French (1769-1821) & CHARLES XIV - BERNADOTTE JEAN BAPTISTE: (1763-1844) Marshal of France, Prince de Pontecorvo and King Charles XIV John of Sweden and Norway 1818-44.
10 documents or letters signed, all documents or letters bound in a Cosway binding with two large miniature of Napoleon I and Jean Baptiste Bernadotte on the upper board. Size c. 90x65 mm. These finely painted miniatures are created on ivory and protected by glass and inset into the covers.

A fine richly gilt morocco binding, inner gilt dentelles, richly gilt spine with gilt titles and decor in compartments, the gilt monogram AS (Axel Stangenberg) to the end of the spine, red silk inner doblures (small tear to front doblure), bound by Riviere & Son with their stamp on the inside of the upper board. According to manuscript notes to the front endpapers this album was a gift to Axel Stangenberg from his cousin Gordon Warburg (Ware) -1944). "Miniatures C. B. Currie" gilt-stamped on the inside of the lower board. In folio (c. 385x275 mm.).
Cosway bindings were usually elaborately bound by Rivière and Son, who was one of London’s top bookbinders, and have one or more hand-painted miniature on ivory by Miss C.B. Currie.
Most documents with the owner stamp of the famous Bibliotheca Lindesiana (Crawford collection, see below).
Acording to a printed /handwritten sheet in the album, it was sold by antiquarian bookdealer Henry Sotheran & Co. (founded 1761), who in the early 1920s used the miniature artist Miss C. B. Currie to paint miniatures for the so called "Cosway bindings" (named after Richard Cosway, a famous miniature painter in the 18th century).

Pension for Marie Rose Morbery, widow after Etienne Gabriel Koller. Also signed by Berthier. With paper seal. C. 495x375 mm. (some folds,minor holes to folds, some browning and spotting).

All 10 documents are finely mounted with "tabs" only in the left margin, most of them together with a transcription in French on the opposite page.

Provenance: The Crawford collection, Bibliotheca Lindesiana. Alexander Lindsay (1812‒1880), known for most of his life as Lord Lindsay, and his son (James) Ludovic Lindsay (1847‒1913), 25th and 26th earls of Crawford, fashioned one of the largest and most significant private libraries ever assembled in Britain. They developed the Bibliotheca Lindesiana, as the library was known, over 70 years, from the early 1830s to the turn of the century.
