Something happens to interior ideals as the 1910s transition into the 1920s. The classical influences that had dominated begin to lighten, lift, and reach a kind of perfection in what later came to be known as Swedish Grace. From the Continent, new impulses arrive. Sophisticated expressions in color and form give rise to an aesthetic dripping with luxury—adorning both exteriors and interiors—in a style we now call Art Deco.
In a bubbling melting pot, these movements blend with functionalism, traditionalism, and—by the late 1930s in Sweden—a blond, flowing, soft and welcoming style that would become known as Swedish Modern.
Thanks to Auktionshuset Kolonn, we now have the opportunity to explore, sift through, study, discover—and perhaps even acquire—carefully selected objects from this era, which marks a high point in Swedish design history.
Period-typical pewter work is presented alongside elegant salon furniture; delicate lighting fixtures share the stage with graceful ceramics; and at the heart of this celebration of form, a selection of artworks is also featured—executed in the same spirit as all the pieces offered under the heading Swedish Grace & Modernism.
