At first he did not intend to pursue a career as an artist but instead he studied medicine. After a while he put that a side and started to study at the Royal Danish Art Academy in Copenhagen and after that he was a student of the artists Laurits Tuxen and Peder Severin Kröyer.

His art mostly consists of finely tuned city images mainly from Copenhagen but also from other Danish cities. He also painted several portraits.

However Johan Rohde is probably most famous as a designer of arts and crafts and mainly silver for the world renowned Danish company Georg Jensen. He worked there for many years and designed pitchers, trays, bowls and vases as well as flatware including the classic pattern "Konge/Acorn". His work for Georg Jensen has definitely contributed to that Georg Jensen today is known around the world. His items for the company are highly sought after today in the auction market.

Johan Rohde passed away in Hellerup in 1935.
